SUNDAY, JAN. 17

The 2010 Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt for the Medallion, presented by Fury Motors, will begin with publication of the first clue in today’s edition of the Pioneer Press.

The lecture, “The Hunt is On: Winter Carnival Treasure Hunt History and Tips,” will be led by librarian James Moriarity at the St. Paul Public Library from 2-3 p.m.

Farewell Tea Celebration for 2009 Queen of the Snows Sarah Schweich. This three-course tea will begin at noon at Macy’s River Room (411 Cedar St.). For information, visit formerqueens.com.

Inaugural St. Paul Winter Carnival Juried Art Show at the Black Dog Cafe. Artists are being asked to envision the Winter Carnival and all of its fun and frivolity from royalty to parades to ice carvings. Closing reception at 6 p.m. Jan. 29. Black Dog Cafe, 308 E. Prince St. in Lowertown.

St. Paul Elementary Art Display. Winners will be displayed in the A-Z Gallery in Lowertown (308 E. Prince St.). theazgallery.org

Display by Pioneer Press artist David Steinlicht. The artist will show a collection of his winter-themed comics in conjunction with the release of his new book, “Cornered.” Pioneer Gallery (open weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) inside the Pioneer Press (345 Cedar St.). The gallery will host a signing event with Steinlicht 4:30-6 p.m. Jan. 28.

Winter Carnival Memorabilia Display presented by the Ramsey County Historical Society and the St. Paul Public Library.

“Hockey Mom, Hockey Dad.” A romantic comedy play about two lonely single parents who meet and fall in love while watching their kids play hockey. Playing various days at Lowry Theater (16 W. The Great Winter Carnival Scavenger Hunt. Search for clues at the Central Library and Ramsey County Historical Society and win prizes.

Broomball Challenges at Landmark Ice Rink. Each day will feature corporate matches at noon and “Happy Hour” challenges at 5 p.m.

JAN. 23-24

Institute of Navigation Satellite Division Autonomous Snow Plow Competition Display. Check out a display of autonomous (computer powered) vehicles near the ice rink by Landmark Center. This event is a prelude to the Inaugural ION Autonomous Snow Plow Competition in January 2011.

JAN. 25-28

St. Paul Winter Carnival Educational Program. Learn about cryogenics and hear a reading of the St. Paul Winter Carnival Legend. Performances at 10:30 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. each day. Science Museum of Minnesota, 120 W. Kellogg Blvd. Sponsored by 3M in partnership with the Science Museum of Minnesota.

Ramsey County Historical Society Celebrates the Winter Carnival. Visit the Society’s first-floor galleries at Landmark Center to view items from its vast collection of Winter Carnival costumes, buttons, photos, programs and more.

Moon Glow Pedestrian Parade. Join neighbors, businesspeople and consulates as they wander up John Ireland Boulevard from the James J. Hill House to the State Capitol, where they will be greeted by tethered hot air balloons. The walk begins at 5:30 p.m.

Fire & Ice Boys Pee Wee Hockey Tournament at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds Coliseum. Three games guaranteed to be played; first game starts at 5:45 p.m.

Family Day Green Events, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Lake Phalen. Features the new St. Paul Winter Carnival event, the Minnesota Kite Association’s “Frosty Fingers Fly” on the south end of Lake Phalen, “Bikes on Ice” and cross-country skiing.

Crispin Iceball Adventure Series. The Second Annual Crispin Iceball Adventure Series, presented by Crispin Hard Apple Cider, will be played on Midway Stadium’s snowy and icy field using vintage baseball rules. The parking lot opens at 11 a.m. for tailgating with the first pitch at 1:30 p.m. Current, former and future St. Paul Saints players will host the St. Croix Base Ball Club. The game is free, but donations for Second Harvest Heartland will be accepted.

St. Paul Winter Carnival Ice Fishing Contest, White Bear Lake. Fishing begins at noon and ends at 3 p.m. with awards following immediately.

Torchlight Parade, downtown St. Paul, 5:30 p.m. starting at Fifth and Wacouta (new route). The parade travels westbound on Fifth to Washington Avenue, then to Fourth Street and ending at St. Peter Street. The Grand Marshals will be members of the 2010 USA Men’s Olympic Curling Team.
