Flouncing feather boas and belting out the tunes, five contestants will be judged on musical performance, song choice, vocal abilities, costuming, crowd appeal and authenticity in portraying the Carnival character, Klondike Kate.

In Winter Carnival Legend, Kate struck it rich in the 1898 Gold Rush by charming legions of miners. They showered her with gold dust, and gave her the nickname Klondike Kate.

Among the contestants this year — the 45th anniversary of the competition — are a social worker, a standup comedian and a jazz singer.

To celebrate the anniversary, a painting by Woodbury artist Richard Hubal will be auctioned at the contest.

The 129th Winter Carnival will take place Jan. 22 to Feb. 1.

Doors open at 6 p.m., competition starts at 6:30. The art auction is at 9 p.m. and the new Kate will be announced around 9:45 p.m. Prom Center is at 484 Inwood Ave. N. Tickets are $20 at the door, $17 with a Carnival button, $15 in advance at klondikekates.org.
