Treasure hunters now are bidden,
Spike on parkland will be hidden
By 8 a.m. Thursday, June 4
The hunt begins then — and not before.
Spike won’t be buried, but in hiding
(In camouflage, or with a view …
Over or under, around or through),
While his searchers clues are guiding.

June skies are dawning blue and fair!
Meanwhile, Spike hunters must take care.
Treasure hunts all have their rules;
This one bans all shovels and tools.
Before you venture out to look,
Decide to play it by the book. (1)

“Most Wanted” in Hugo (that’s our Spike)
By treasure hunters and the like;
But searchers, keep the upper hand —
Confine your search to public land.
From park to park, go make the lap
Guided by a city parks map. (2)

(2) A Hunt for the Golden Spike map is available at official hunt sponsors’ places of business (while supplies last) or at Hugo City Hall during regular business hours. It can also be downloaded from www.readthecitizen.com by clicking on the link.

Now if you find your spirits flaggin’,
Doubtful that you’ll bring the swag in,
Make certain to set aside a day
To savor treats at Lions Park,
For games of skill, the bright Midway—
To ride the Scrambler after dark.
REMINDER: Spike is NOT hidden on private property!

There’s no glory in second-best:
It’s one part luck — you know the rest.
Beyond G-N-D, a treasure trove’s
Just frosting on the cake, by jove.

History’s a mystery;
We’re hobbled by our distant past.
Before new homes, fields stretched wide;
In this hunt, don’t get called off-side.
