2016 Hunt for the Golden Spike

OFFICIAL RULES

The first three treasure hunt clues are published in The Citizen’s May 26 edition, on our website (www.readthecitizen.com) and in the 2016 Good Neighbor Days tab, inserted in thousands of area newspapers. The hunt officially begins at 8 a.m. Thursday, June 9.

A new clue will be posted on The Citizen’s website (www.readthecitizen.com) during Good Neighbor Days, two times daily Thursday through Saturday, June 9-11, one at approximately 8 a.m. and one at approximately 5 p.m. The final clue will be posted at approximately 8 a.m. Sunday, June 12. (If you’re parked on our website, don’t forget to hit the refresh button to update the page!) New this year, clues will be posted online only.

The Citizen reserves the right to discontinue the hunt at any time if public property is destroyed. Spike will not be buried, so shovels are not needed.

If you find the Golden Spike, immediately call the Spike Hotline (651-407-1209) to report where it was found and to qualify for a $100 instant cash prize. No purchase is necessary to win.

The Citizen will also award up to $300 in additional cash and $550 in gift cards or certificates good at area businesses to the Spike finder if he/she has a completed “Golden Ticket” form officially stamped by all of the individual sponsors of the 2016 Hunt for the Golden Spike. Copies of the Golden Ticket forms may be clipped from the May 26 edition of The Citizen, from the Good Neighbor Days tab, or downloaded from The Citizen’s website (www.readthecitizen.com).

Read the news, and you will see
GND's having an anniversary!
In the spirit of fun, the Spike is hiding.
Anticipation is igniting!
But searchers, keep the upper hand --
Only search on public land.

Though he might be out of sight,
Spike is never underground.
It's more a game of lost and found.
When taking part in the summer rite,
Leave the shovel at home as your good deed.
All Spike hunters please take heed!
Read the rules. They're easy to read.

But first, to quote the “Monsters” clerk,
You’ve got to do the paperwork.
Clip that Golden Ticket stat
And get it stamped, or you’ll fall flat.
Note: You’ll find a Golden Ticket inside the Citizen’s
May 26 edition, within the Good Neighbor Days
insert, or at www.readthecitizen.com where
you can download and print it.

By the poet we are told
Nature’s first green is always gold,
Add in summer, winter, fall.
Four ways to treasure — that is all.

The trail to treasure’s getting warmer;
The more the merrier, they say.
A Spike finder’s an outperformer —
Take the long view. Find the “K”.

Gold flowed through Midas’ veins, you see,
Likely near an artery.
Seek out a spire from decades prior,
Often seen on Webster’s “byre,”
If you would earn the finder’s fee.
(Don’t let your chance for Spike slip by.
Whatever you do, stay in the dry.)

Diamond, circle, rhombus, square.
Of the shape of things, please be aware.
Spike’s treasure ace will keep the pace,
Limit the search to this public space,
And secure the victory.
