The Hunt for the Medallion
On Public Land in North St. Paul
Monday through Friday, February 9- 14, 2004

Old time North St. Paul resident and a man whose favorite event was Snow Frolics, Lloyd Koesling, spent a great deal of time and effort in writing the clues and hiding the medallion for the original Snow Frolics Celebrations.

Unfortunately, the original medallion is lost, but we now have a new one thanks to the skill of Jim Hunt from Custom Handling.

The medallion will be hidden on public land within the boundaries of North St. Paul. All are invited to join in on the search. This event is sponsored by local businesses. If you have a Snow Frolics Button, it increases the amount of the Grand Prize from $250 in medallion dollars to $500 in medallion dollars good at local participating businesses.

Clues will be posted on the web site daily after 8:00 a.m. starting on Monday, February 9 with the final clue posted on Saturday, February 14. Clues will also be available at City Hall, The Community Center and on the North Saint Paul City website.

The prize will be awarded on Saturday, February 14.

Clues

Wake up! It’s time to begin!
Only on the north part of St. Paul’s hemisphere
Will you find this thing in.
It’s a metal snowman, my friend,
And the medallion of North St. Paul we will lend.
Now somewhere in this 1887 established town the snowman lies
And to find it grants you a hefty prize.
So gather alone or in droves and drives,
Because only on public land this medallion lies.

Look up, look down, look all around.
What’s the mascot of this town?
Size doesn’t matter, that is true,
but he is definitely looking down for you
A distance from this mascot is where the medallion can be found.
But without a button your prize is half as round
So hit the parks and streets and town,
And one more thing, it’s on the ground.

Look at the woods and bushes and trees
For you can only find one of these.
Look left, look right, with such delight
Because this prize is out of sight.
But if you look long and hard and right
Once found you’re guaranteed delight.
It’s on the ground that’s been stated and true
But the number of trees is only a few
So grab your coat and hat, but whatever you do
Leave your skates at home because they won’t help you!

Let’s cut the Captain’s Village in two.
If you know who he is , you’ll know what to do.
One part is older but the other is new.
Castle’s vision was for the latter, and that’s your clue.
In 1888 the Fifth Addition is what it was called,
But keep your eyes open wide
and to help you even more decide
Look right when facing east of the 36 divide.

You diggers leave the parks behind!
The Fifth Addition was a clue not a mine.
Leave the trail and the depot behind,
But be sure they are not too far from your mind.
Here's one more thing to put you in the mode:
In Monopoly there are four railroads.
Take the one that starts with a "P"
and that will be the old name of the street where I be.
Now other activities do abound
When you find your self in this part of town.
So remember that public land is the site,
Please don’t stray and create a fright.

This is the last day to find your loot.
Don’t run a lap or shoot a hoop.
You’ll stray if you should go that way,
Because the medallion isn’t inside where you play.

Wrapped up as snug as a bug can be,
A little brown package is waiting for thee.
It is on the ground but not under a tree.
And one last thing, these snow bucks are free!
