Stillwater Lumberjack Days Medallion Hunt Clues
2023
By Erin McQuay of Hope House of St. Croix Valley
Sponsored by The Greater Stillwater Area Chamber Foundation
And the Medallion made by Charlie Joy of Woodstock Creations

This hunt was so much fun! Although, I admit, when the medallion was not found after the third clue was read, I panicked thinking the medallion had been moved, so I secretly rode down to the hiding spot after dark and felt for it. It was still there, and was simply under the dead leaves and dust and sand I had placed on it, but I did have to reach through the horizontal bars in order to reach it. I do my best to be inclusive and hide it in a spot that is accessible and safe for most individuals. It sounds like a lot of people were hot on its trail! So well done, and thank you so much for being wonderful sports, hunters and neighbors to each other. I’m so proud to be a part of Stillwater and this community, and that includes you.

Each year the first clue doesn’t teach you too much,
Like a neighborhood, a park, a direction or such.
This year is no different to begin your search,
So relax, grab a friend, eat a meal, buy some merch.
The hunt has begun, so dust off your rust.
This year’s historic knowledge of our town is a must.
Explanation:
Each year the first clue doesn’t teach you too much, - “teach” refers to the site of Schulenburg School located at Schulenburg Park. Schulenburg Boeckler Mill was one of the lumber mills established in the lumber boom of the 1800s.
Like a neighborhood, a park, a direction or such. - The Brown’s Creek Trail goes through all of these.
This year is no different to begin your search, - All the rules stayed consistent as prior years.
So relax, grab a friend, eat a meal, buy some merch. - The Brown’s Creek Trail is used by many people to relax, walk or bike with a friend, travel to downtown restaurants, and just go buy LJD merchandise!
The hunt has begun, so dust off your rust. - The Brown’s Creek Trail bridge where the medallion was hidden has a lot of rust on it as it was used as a train bridge until 1982, before being used by the Minnesota Zephyr, until it was made into the current Brown’s Creek State Trail in 2014. ALSO - the medallion was hidden under some dust, sand, and dead leaves (not many).
This year’s historic knowledge of our town is a must. - Not everyone knows that the area on the north hill was once referred to (and still is by some) as Dutchtown. Or North Hill/South Hill, etc.

North Hill or South Hill? Both are beautiful to boot.
But only one of them is where you’ll find this year’s loot.
On this particular quest you won’t visit a beach,
Although on your search there is sand within reach.
Explanation:
North Hill or South Hill? Both are beautiful to boot. - The medallion was hidden on North Hill, and “boot” was in reference to JX Event Venue, which was originally the Connolly Shoe Factory, which is closer to the North Hill.
But only one of them is where you’ll find this year’s loot.
On this particular quest you won’t visit a beach, - Beach Rd is located on the South Hill, and this was steering folks away from the South Hill.
Although on your search there is sand within reach. - On either side of the Browns Creek Trail bridge is sand at Schulenberg Park, and the sand on the beaches of the St. Croix River. Also, the medallion was hidden under some dust, sand, and dead leaves. But not enough that anyone would need to dig anything.

A stroll above air for a date is lovely for certain
And the leaves on some trees are quite like a curtain
A date is more equal when each pays their own way
Are you enjoying this hunt with learning and play?
Explanation:
A stroll above air for a date is lovely for certain. - This refers to the bridge, where cars travel under while people can talk a nice walk above them. The “date” refers to the date on the side of the bridge, in a small inscription.
And the leaves on some trees are quite like a curtain. - Leaves on Willow trees are like curtains and Willow Street is very close to the bridge.
A date is more equal when each pays their own way. - When dates pay for themselves, this custom is referred to as “going Dutch”, which is a play on the neighborhood “Dutchtown”. At the far north end of Stillwater is a small enclave long known as Dutchtown. This settlement dates back 150 years to when the Schulenburg & Boeckler lumber mill established this little village to provide workers for the mill. It was separated by a mile from downtown- Stillwater. In return for their labors, the workers enjoyed company houses, a company store, and meager wages. In those boom days of lumbering, the workers were all German, recruited to come and live in Deutschtown.
Are you enjoying this hunt with learning and play? - Learning refers to the Schulenburg School site, which was used as a school for the younger elementary grades until 1937.

Treat wounds with this herb, witch is an age-old cure
Whoops, I didn’t ace spelling from this school to be sure
Not on the rainbow, but as common as any,
This color is found on poplars, willows, and other trees a’plenty
Less than a river, but more than a trickle,
Find this medallion! Don’t let it be fickle!
Explanation:
Treat wounds with this herb, witch is an age-old cure. - Witch Hazel is a medicinal herb, used for treating wounds and is still given to women after natural childbirth in some cases. “Witch” is the misspelling of the word “which”, which would be grammatically correct, but was misused for the purpose of directing people to Hazel Street, which runs into Brown’s Creek Trail.
Whoops, I didn’t ace spelling from this school to be sure. - Another shout out to Schulenburg school, in hopes of guiding people towards the location.
Not on the rainbow, but as common as any,
This color is found on poplars, willows, and other trees a’plenty. - The color brown, for Brown’s Creek Trail, and it is near Poplar Street, Willow Street, and is surrounded by actual trees on the trail.
Less than a river, but more than a trickle, - This refers to a “Creek” as part of Brown’s Creek Trail.
Find this medallion! Don’t let it be fickle! - Fickle rhymes with trickle, and I don’t get to use the word “fickle” enough in my opinion.
